Hilltop Ingleside Mine, a subsidiary of Hilltop Basic Resources, Inc., is developing an underground mine about 5 miles west of Maysville. The mine is adjacent to East Kentucky Power Cooperative's (EKPC) Spurlock generating station. EKPC will be the primary consumer of the limestone from the mine.
All of the mining will be underground. The initial development of the mine will commence in early 2009 for the excavation of the entrance to the mine and to develop a slope to the underground workings. It is expected that production of limestone will commence in mid 2010.
Eventually, Hilltop plans to have high calcium limestone available from this mine for other utility customers seeking a cost effective river delivery supply source.
At Spurlock Station, EKPC has two (2) new scrubbers coming online, one new fluidized bed generating unit and one existing fluidized bed generating unit, all of which use large amounts of high calcium limestone to remove sulfur dioxide from plant emissions. This equipment reduces sulfur dioxide by about 95 percent. Once all of this equipment is operating, Spurlock Station will require about 1 million tons of limestone per year. Over the last few years, EKPC has studied several options and determined that the proposed project is the most cost effective course for its members. EKPC expects this project will produce savings of several million dollars per year for its members.
There will be no site activity until January 2009. At that time a limited number of employees will be required. The mine team will grow over the following 18 months. Hilltop will be using the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training to receive and process all job applications.
